They are searching for the workers in order to get some help for the picking of the cotton. Soon enough they find some Mexican workers which are looking for work and they are willing to work for Luke and Pappy happily.
They also find a family to work and the family is also agree in order to work for them. The family we are talking about is basically a family of the hill people. One of the very important characters of the book is Tally Spruill, she is a 17 years old girl. She is very beautiful and she lets the Luke to watch her naked while bathing once. But she is having a brother Hank which is not a very friendly guy and he is also a mentally unstable one.
