It is quite hard to believe that some young adult fans have not read Gene Yang’s American Born Chinese. American Born Chinese has to be one of the best-received books upon release. Even though it failed at winning the National Book Award, it was at least one of the finalists. However, there were tons of other awards waiting for the book including the Eisner Award, Michael L. Printz, and also the Publishers Weekly best comic of the year. It tells the readers how great the book is going to be while reading.
What’s special about the book is that it doesn’t bring one specific story. Instead, it focuses on three classic tales including the folk tale of the Monkey King, a first-generation child of immigrants, and the third story is of an American white boy and his Chinese cousin. His Chinese cousin visits him every year and to a reader’s surprise, he is connected to the folk tales as well.
When you are reading the book for the first time, it might put you off. This is because at first, the three stories do not seem related. However, when you keep going, some of the weirdest and fun discoveries are waiting for you. For instance, you will learn how this Chinese cousin is not only related to the folk tale characters but he is one of them. Though, we can’t reveal which one for obvious reasons.

American Born Chinese comes from the legendary pen of American cartoonist Gene Luen Yang. He is an American novelist and cartoonist. Yang has given several lectures on comic books and American comic culture. Besides these activities and receiving many fellowships, Yang has a huge fan base for writing the American Born Chinese. He has received multiple awards for the said book.
