Tess of the d’Urbervilles is the masterpiece of Thomas Hardy. It was first appeared as a censored version in form of serial in a British newspaper The Graphic in 1891. Tess of the d’Urbervilles pdf Review:

The novel features story of Tess, oldest daughter of John and Joan Durbeyfield, both of whom are illiterate peasants. However, someone tells John that Durbeyfield is a corruption of d’Urbervilles, surname of a noble Normal family. At the same day they go to a village May Dance. On the way back, John is too drunk and Tess takes the reins. She accidentally crashed it and wounds the horse. So she decides to work as a maid and buy another horse and so the story goes on. The novel has been adopted into multiple theater shows, films and television shows. It is considered as Thomas Hardy’s finest novel.

Thomas Hardy was a Victorian English novelist and also a poet. He was influenced by George Elliot, William Wordsworth and Charles Dickens’ and thus criticized the Victorian era, focusing mainly on decline of rural society.
